why greeting cards matter

,

even before artists, poets and corporations began creating and selling greeting cards for various occasions, human beings were writing each other personal notes, which sometimes included the author’s drawings, or some other little trinket of affection.

these notes and letters, especially the ones depicting great love, were often saved for decades, passing down thru the generations as treasured mementos, important enough to keep.

people still send greeting cards, but not like they used to.

now days they just send a text, or an e-mail, or simply tag someone in a social media post, but those things cannot be displayed on your nightstand or shelf, where you can see them every day, reminding you that someone cared enough to send it.

this can be especially true when you are ill, bedbound or going thru hard times where you lack the strength to even scroll thru your phone.

it is also during those times that people have a tendency to avoid the suffering one, simply because they don’t know what to say, or feel overwhelmed by the situation.

which is why, after my daughter died, i created a line of greeting cards specifically designed for the terminally ill to give and to receive.

i named the line “let’s talk” because i truly hope the cards can help to open the lines of communication between the dying and those left behind, as well as to foster understanding and compassion for the suffering of others.
